Weasel War Dance
A Penny for My Thoughts: Originally bred to hunt rabbits and mice, ferrets have become popular pets.
A close relative of the polecat, the FERRET has been domesticated for some 2,500 years. This mammal is approximately 20 inches in length, including a 5 inch tail. The coloration is either white, brown, black or a mix, with the males being substantially larger than the females They have a lifespan of 7 to 10 years, and are 1.5 to 4 pounds in weight.
Originally bred to hunt rabbits and mice, ferrets have become popular pets. These little critters sleep 14 to 18 hours a day, preferring an inclosed area to bed. When awake however, they are fur-balls of energy. Most active at dawn and dusk, ferrets flit here and there...inquisitively exploring anything and everything in their pathway. Settling down for a cuddle with their humans, they benefit from companionship. They can befriend dogs and cats, but heads-up on hamsters and mice as roommates!
As of skunks, ferrets can release a scent from their anal glands. This tends to occur when they are frightened, yet the odor is much less potent than a skunk's. Some owners have this gland removed- others consider that an unnecessary mutilation. A happy, excited ferret will perform the 'Weasel War Dance,' where they hop and spin sideways while verbalizing with a soft clucking noise. When agitated, they omit a distinctive hiss. Carnivores with small stomachs, they need to eat frequently. Prepared, commercial dry ferret food that provides a meaty diet is a sound way to keep them healthy.
Ferrets can be trained to use a cat litter box. They are clean and an occasional bath is enjoyed.. The average 'ferret day' consists of sleep time in a ferret cage, and much desired free time to play, exercise and explore. These little ones should be neutered or spayed when young and are for the most part, healthy. Yearly vaccinations for canine distemper and rabies are part of ferret care.
If your interest in committing to ferrets has peaked, the first step is research. Follow that with an outing to several ferret rescue organizations...looking for those that provide adoptions and education and are not-for-profit.
"There was a time I thought I was a ferret," Will said, "but that turned out to be an opium haze."
