Brookfield to Apply for Freeze on Enforcement of Affordable Housing Statute: Report

The statute allows developers to side step local zoning laws if proposed developments include affordable housing.

BROOKFIELD, CT — The Town of Brookfield is planning to apply for a moratorium of a state statute 8-30g, an affordable housing law that allows developers to bypass local zoning laws, reports the News Times.

The law prevents municipalities from denying affordable housing applications for reasons other than health and safety. First Selectman Steve Dunn said developers threaten to build unwanted housing complexes in the Four Corners district.

To qualify for the moratorium, two percent of a municipality's housing must priced so that tenants do not spend more than 30 percent of their income on housing costs. Dunn said that the completion of the Laurel Hill complex helped the town meet this criteria.
