Brookfield K-9 Officer Diagnosed With Cancer: Police

Major, a 5-year-old German Shepherd, is expected to live between one and three months, according to a statement from the Brookfield PD.

BROOKFIELD. CT — The Brookfield Police Department's very popular K-9 officer has been diagnosed with lymphoma, the BPD announced Thursday.

Major, a 5-year-old German Shepherd, is expected to live between one and three months, according to the statement, "yet we are hopeful he will beat those odds."

Major's handler Corp. Kyek has made the decision that the dog will continue to work for as long as he is able, and the two "will still work patrol because that is what Major loves to do."

Students at Huckleberry Hill Elementary School chose Major's name while Kyek and Major were in training. The dog has been a working member of the BPD since March 2018.

"Please keep Major and Corporal Kyek in your thoughts and prayers as they navigate through this tough time," police officials posted on social media.
