Brookfield Library Announces Free Programs

The library will welcome an arctic explorer on December 1 and a member of the United States Naval Institute on December 6 in Brookfield.

From the Brookfield Library: An Overview of the Arctic with Arctic Explorer Moki Kokoris. Thursday, December 1 at 7:00 p.m.

Please join us as arctic explorer and educator Moki Kokoris gives us a fascinating overview of the Arctic which will include her personal account of an expedition to the North Pole, atmospheric and optical phenomenon, science of sea ice, northern lights, climate change, distinct animals and indigenous cultures.

A visionary multidisciplinary educator, editor, writer and environmental advocate, Moki Kokoris is the founder of “90-north” – an outreach education program series that introduces audiences to topics relating to the Arctic and sub-Arctic regions, covering all disciplines from Anthropology to Zoology. Kokoris is also Director of the Wilderness Research Foundation, Visiting Speaker for the Arctic Research Consortium of the US and member of the Explore Foundation’s World Explorers Bureau. She is the first woman of Ukrainian descent to reach the Geographic North Pole. This free program has been funded by The Friends of the Brookfield Library. Please register, online or 203-775-6241.

The Strategic Significance of the Attack on Pearl Harbor with Professor Mark Albertson. Tuesday, December 6 at 7:00 p.m.

Professor Mark Albertson will discuss “The Strategic Significance of the Japanese Attack on Pearl Harbor.” He will not be speaking on the attack itself; military and related channels are going to broadcast that approach all month. Rather, he will discuss the why?: rise of Japan as a power; resulting friction with the United States; importance of oil; the importance of naval power in the world’s largest ocean; and, how Pearl Harbor, together with the Red Army’s victory over the Wehrmacht at the gates of Moscow showcase December 1941 as the turning point of the war.

Mark Albertson has been a member of the United States Naval Institute for more than 25 years. He is an historical research editor at Army Aviation magazine and has authored three books: USS Connecticut: Constitution State Battleship, They’ll Have to Follow You! The Triumph of the Great White Fleet, and On History: A Treatise. He teaches World War II history at Norwalk Community College for Lifetime Learners.This free program has been funded by The Friends of the Brookfield Library.
