On Friday, January 17th, Brookfield Library will host the Future Teachers of America club (FTA)

program is the first in the library’s new Community Conversations program, sponsored by a

In preparation for the event students in FTA attended a training session with educator and
professional facilitator Wendy Youngblood to hone their public speaking skills and to get tips
for facilitating conversation. The students also installed informative displays in the library’s teen
area. FTA member Emma Sands said of her club’s participation, “In our club we try to be
involved as much as possible in the community because our FTA has something so special to
offer that goes beyond just a high school club. Education is a huge topic and we want to share
with our community the education experience in Brookfield.”
According to Teen Librarian Abbey Lynch, “Community Conversations is a wonderful way for
teens to learn how to facilitate productive civic conversations while also getting to share
something they value with the Brookfield community. Working on the displays also provides a
sense of ownership of the library’s teen space, and an opportunity to get familiar with our
resources.”
