Brookfield Town Park Will Reopen Wednesday

The town park had closed on Tuesday after the Candlewood Lake Authority found toxic blue-green algae.

It’s safe to go back into the water, according to Brookfield’s Parks and Recreation Department. They announced Tuesday that the town park will reopen on Wednesday after toxic blue-green algae was found.

“Effective Wednesday August 19th the Brookfield Town Beach will once again be open to the public.
After visual inspections this afternoon (Tuesday 8/18) our Local and State Public Health officials have determined that our swimming area may reopen,” they said on their Facebook page.

Earlier this month Patch reported that the Candlewood Lake Authority (CLA) was warning residents about the toxic blue green algae. The algae is known as Cyanobacteria and can produce harmful toxins. The CLA warns that these are potentially dangerous and should be avoided when swimming, fishing or boating. Contact with blue-green algae can cause skin, eye and respiratory irritation. Ingestion of the algae can cause vomiting and diarrhea, according to the CLA.
