Click It or Ticket Checkpoint in Brookfield Friday

Officers from several area departments, including Bethel, Redding, Ridgefield and Newtown, will join Brookfield police at two locations Friday afternoon checking for drivers not wearing their seatbelts as part of the statewide Click It or Ticket campaign.

From 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., police will be stopping motorists on Federal Road, north of the Route 7 exit 12 onramp, and on Route 133, just east of the intersection with Federal Road.

The following is from a press released issued Thursday:

The 2013 Click It or Ticket campaign plays a critical role in the effort to keep people safe on our roads and highways. The campaign aims to heighten awareness that seat belts save lives. Aggressive enforcement of safety belt, child safety seat, speed, and DUI laws will remind motorists to use good highway safety sense, especially during the highly traveled summer months.

Ejection from the vehicle is one of the most injurious events that can happen to a person in a crash. In fatal crashes, 75 percent of passenger car occupants who were totally ejected from the vehicle were killed. Safety belts are effective in preventing total ejection: only 1 percent of the occupants wearing a seat belt were totally ejected, compared with 22 percent of the unrestrained occupants.

The goal of the Click It or Ticket Mobilization is not to give out tickets, but rather to influence people to buckle up and prevent injuries and fatalities.
