Danbury Contractor Scammed Brookfield Woman Out Of $23K: PD
The contractor told the woman that he was "fully licensed and insured." Those were his first lies, according to police.
BROOKFIELD, CT — Police charged a Danbury contractor with larceny after they say he bilked a Brookfield woman out of $23,000 for construction work paid for, but never completed.
The Brookfield Police Department was contacted in July by a Laurel Hill woman who said she and her husband cut a check for $23,125 payable to Paul Stock, 39, a Danbury contractor. The payment was to build an addition to their home. The woman said the check was cashed, but the work never begun.
According to the warrant, Stock told the woman that he was "fully licensed and insured," had her sign a contract, and said that his company, C&R Contracting, would complete the work by the end of September.

Stock had completed work for the woman in April, repairing the house after a chimney fire and converting a closet into a bathroom. The court records show that Stock had not filed for any permits for either of those projects with the Brookfield building department, and no inspection was made for the fire damage work.
Bank records obtained by the police as part of their investigation indicated that Stock deposited the check two days after the woman signed the work contract, according to the warrant. That bank account has since been frozen, the court documents said.

Stock was charged on Nov. 11 with first degree larceny and three counts of misrepresenting himself as a home improvement contractor. He was released on a $5,000 bond, and is scheduled to appear in court Friday.
