Drive-Thru Proposal for Downtown Prompts Debate
Will allowing drive-thrus for restaurants and other establishments help or hinder the development of downtown?
BROOKFIELD, CT — A debate is underway in town over whether allowing drive-thru fast food establishments in the Four Corners would help or hinder the development of downtown.
The discussion has been prompted by an application made to the Zoning Commission for a zone change in the area around the old Hearth Restaurant property, which Dunkin Donuts wants to occupy. The town attorney recommended the commission consider allowing drive-thrus via a special permit.
But critics of both the zone change and special permit provision say that a Dunkin drive-thru will work counter to the pedestrian-friendly efforts the town has made in Four Corners. In the past year, the town has added sidewalks and other amenities in an effort to raise the walkability of the area.
