GoFundMe Started For Woman Injured In Brookfield Car Accident

Kaylee Cardenas was pried free from a burning car by a brave off-duty firefighter, but she's not out of the woods yet.

BROOKFIELD, CT — Kaylee Cardenas, the Brookfield woman rescued from her burning car Saturday by an off-duty firefighter, is not out of the woods yet.

Cardenas' family has begun an online fundraiser to offset the costs of her care and recovery.

"She is currently in serious but stable condition in the hospital, requiring multiple surgeries and burn care after sustaining injuries to her spine, face, arms, legs, & ankle," organizers posted on the Cardenas' GoFundMe page. "Kaylee is awake; her long road to recovery will consist of more surgery for broken bones, wound care, and extensive rehabilitation."

Donors had pledged $6,876 out of the $15,000 goal as of Friday afternoon.

Off-duty White Plains, NY firefighter and Brookfield resident, Nicholas Perri Jr., is credited with saving Cardenas' life shortly after 3 a.m. Saturday. The woman's car had been driven into an embankment on Route 7, trapping her inside, before catching fire, according to Brookfield Fire officials. Perri was able to pry the woman free from the burning car and get her to safety before being assisted by Brookfield Fire and EMS teams.

"If not for the quick response of all the heroes responsible for her rescue and emergency care that morning, she would not be with us today," the fundraisers' organizers posted.
