Huckleberry School Project Gets a Date for Referendum

BROOKFIELD, CT — The referendum on a proposal to build a new Huckleberry Hill Elementary School will go before voters in March, the News Times is reporting.
Residents in attendance at a special town meeting Tuesday night received a presentation on the $78.1 million project from the architect and town officials.
The plan calls for a nearly 139,000-square-foot school to be built on the existing Huckleberry Hill campus. Total out-of-pocket for Brookfield would be $63.3 million, assuming the town receives the state grant for which it plans to apply.

The school would serve prekindergarten through fifth grade, bringing fifth-graders down from the middle school while combining Huckleberry Hill and Center elementary schools.
If residents approve the project at the referendum scheduled for March 5, construction would begin in the fall of 2020, with students moving into the new building in fall of 2022.
