Luckily I met Ridgefield author Robert Riche a couple of years ago when I interviewed him in Ridgefield about his poetry book. http://www.newstimes.com/local/article/Life-death-work-and-love-are-in-his-poems-3675941.php
So naturally I directed my latest pitch for freelance work to him in an email of which he wished me well and sent me a copy of his new novel, “The Flautist.”
Flattered and indoors without internet this past weekend, I started the book, which I think deserves mention in an "amusing" column.

The flautist (or flute player) refers to Kruger Hufmann who makes the tragic mistake of leaving his wife and two small children for the charms of an older man of the world, rich, sophisticated and elegant Charles DuLong.
Kruger’s wife Sara, heartbroken and dismayed, throws her husband out. In time, she meets a new man, another musician by the name of Claude who wins her heart.

Meanwhile her husband wants to come back to her and the children.
Sara is torn between Kruger and her new lover who has been offered a symphony chair in Berlin, and wants her and the children to join him there, which Sara is reluctant to do. When it turns out that Sara is pregnant with Claude’s child, and undecided about her feelings toward Kruger, she cannot tell either man, but chooses to have an abortion as her only alternative.
A somewhat demented anti-abortion activist intervenes outside the abortion clinic, with tragic results for all involved. The story is a new twist on gay culture, though it is much more than that, having to do with the human heart and love’s confusions.
“The Flautist” is the 11th novel by Robert Riche whose website is <robertriche.com>. The novel is available from Amazon and Barnes & Noble. Bookstores can order it.
