Police Blotter: Bus Incident Delays Huckleberry Students; Shoplifting at Shop Rite

Monday, April 11, through Wednesday, April 13.

Monday, April 11

The parent of a Huckleberry Hill Elementary School (HHES) student struck a bus while backing out of a parking space around 3:30 p.m.

The accident was extremely minor, according to school district Director of Business and Technology Art Colley, however the bus was held for almost an hour while police officers checked with each student individually. The vehicle’s mirror clipped the bus’s bumper, leaving behind some of the car’s paint, but there were no injuries.

The parent driver allegedly saw that the damage was minor and left the school to pick up another child at Whisconier Middle School (WMS). Police arrived at the scene to assess the damage, however the driver had already contacted the bus company to explain what had happened and, after picking up his other child, went down to the police station to give a full report, according to Major Jay Purcell.

The damage was almost insignificant, Purcell said, and not charges have been filed against the parent.

Around 4:30 p.m., a second bus arrived and the students were split up between the two in order to get them home quicker. According to Colley, several parents arrived to pick up their children so that they wouldn’t have to wait.
