Police ID Victim In Fatal Boating Accident On Candlewood Lake​

DEEP officials have identified both men involved in the tragic boating accident on Sunday afternoon.

BROOKFIELD, CT — Authorities have identified the men involved in the fatal boat accident on Candlewood Lake this weekend.

State Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) Environmental Conservation (EnCon) Police have identified Gary Hayes, 48, of East Hartford, as the man killed when a 17 foot motorboat capsized on Sunday shortly after noon. He was pronounced deceased after being transported to Danbury Hospital.

A second man, Joseph Miranda, 29, of Manchester, swam to shore and refused medical treatment.

Tragically, this is the second recent fatal boating accident on Candlewood Lake. In June, Wanda Tirado, 38, of Waterbury, who was a popular teacher at Saint Mary School in Waterbury was killed in a boating collision.

She sustained fatal injuries as a result of the boating accident that took place on Tuesday, June 19. Tirado was a swimmer from the involved vessel. EnCon Police arrested Gary Morrone, age 65, from Oakville, after he allegedly tried to evade the scene of the collision. He was charged with reckless operation of vessel 1st degree, failure to help collision victim, and failure to immediately notify law enforcement of injury.

At the time of Tirado's death her school released a statement saying, "Everyone who knew Ms. Tirado knows how much she loved her students and knows that she would have done anything for them. We ask that you keep her daughters, Amanda and Daniella, in your thoughts and prayers."
