Smoke, No Fire at Whisconier Middle Friday Morning

Near-vacant school evacuated due to smoke pouring from ceiling.

(WMS) was evacuated Friday morning after heavy smoke began pouring out of a light fixture in the science room shortly after 8 a.m.

The few administrative and office staffers working in the building exited quickly, though flames never showed and no actual fire was found. The smoke was coming from between the ceiling tiles and the upper floor of the school, prompting fire crews to canvas the building from top to bottom to ensure that everything was safe.

“There’s not a whole lot going on” inside the building, Brookfield Fire Company President Manny Cabral said, “Which is good in our business.”

According to fire personnel, the smoke was generated by a fan in one of the air conditioning units and the Fire Marshal cleared the scene around 10:30 a.m.

The cause was likely an electrical issue and was isolated to the one room, Superintendent of Schools Anthony Bivona said Friday morning at the scene.

The head of building maintenance arrived shortly after the building was cleared to investigate the root of the electrical problem.

There were no programs scheduled at the school for later in the day and the building will likely be certified safe and opened before it is needed again, according to Bivona.
