Unattended Candle Nearly Burns Down Brookfield Home: FD

A candle left burning while the occupants were not home caused smoke damage throughout the first floor of the house.

BROOKFIELD, CT — A holiday candle left burning while no one was home came very close to setting the home ablaze on New Year's Day, according to the Brookfield Volunteer Fire Company.

Members of the BVFC answered a fire alarm from a single family dwelling on Wednesday. First responders encountered a burning odor. Further investigation revealed damage due to a candle left burning while the occupants were not home, and smoke damage throughout the first floor of the house.

"As you can see this was as close as it could get to having a fire in their home," fire officials posted on social media.

The BVFC reminded residents that candles are dangerous, and discourages their use. "They should never be left unattended and should always be in containers away from combustibles," fire officials posted.
