BROOKFIELD, CT — A woman who last month pleaded not guilty to a charge of embezzling funds from a Brookfield parent-teacher organization has announced her decision to apply for a special program to avoid a possible prison term, the News-Times is reporting.
Monica Bevilacqua, 39, of Brookfield, served as treasurer of the Center Elementary School PTO from November 2016 to July 2018. In December, she was accused of taking money from the organization's accounts via more than 180 personal orders charged to the PTO's credit card and a series of checks. She was charged with one count of illegal use of a credit card, one count of second-degree larceny, and three counts of second-degree forgery.
Bevilacqua’s decision to apply for a “diversionary” program came during her April 11 hearing at Danbury Superior Court, the News-Times is reporting. Her next court date is scheduled for May 14.
