CANTON, CT — Members of the Canton Fire & EMS Department conducted river rescue training on the Farmington River Monday, June 8, using warm weather conditions to return the department’s rescue boat to the water.

The training exercise focused on boat operations, removing victims from the water and coordinating rescue efforts.

The drill also provided hands-on experience for newer members of the department.

Fire department officials said the exercise reflects the broad range of emergencies modern firefighters and emergency medical personnel must be prepared to handle.

In addition to fire suppression, responders are trained to manage water rescues, technical rescues, medical emergencies and hazardous materials incidents, among other situations.

Department officials said ongoing training is critical to maintaining those specialized skills and ensuring personnel are prepared to respond when needed.

The training comes as recreational activity on the Farmington River increases during the summer months.

The department also recognized the members who participated in the training, noting that the time spent preparing behind the scenes is part of its commitment to public safety for Canton residents and visitors.
