CANTON, CT — The Town of Canton will hold its annual Memorial Day Parade on Monday, May 25, beginning at 10 a.m., as residents gather to honor military service members who died serving the country.
The parade will travel from Dyer Avenue to Collinsville Cemetery on Huckleberry Hill Road, where a memorial service will take place following the procession.
Town officials are encouraging residents to attend the event in remembrance of “the heroes who served and sacrificed for our nation.”
Memorial Day honors military service members who died while serving in the United States armed forces.
The holiday originated after the Civil War as “Decoration Day” and became a federal holiday in 1971.
Holiday closings
In addition to the Memorial Day observance, town officials announced several holiday closures for Monday, May 25.
Canton Town Offices, Canton Public Schools, and the Canton Public Library will all be closed in observance of Memorial Day.
