Bear Alert: Canton Police Issue Safety Tips As Sightings Increase

CANTON, CT — The Canton Police Department is reminding residents to take precautions to avoid attracting bears, issuing a list of safety tips focused on eliminating food sources and reducing potential encounters.

Officials emphasized that feeding bears is dangerous and illegal, and urged residents to remove birdfeeders during warmer months.

Feeders should be stored until late fall, with any spilled seed cleaned up and unused supplies kept in secure locations such as closed garages.

Proper trash storage is also critical, police said.

Garbage should be kept in airtight containers inside enclosed areas and placed বাইরে only on the morning of pickup.

Adding ammonia to trash bags and cans can help reduce odors that attract bears, and containers should be cleaned regularly.

Residents are advised not to store recyclables in screened porches or sunrooms, as bears can smell items and may damage structures to access them.

Pet safety is another concern.

Dogs should be supervised at all times outdoors and kept on a short leash during walks or hikes, as loose animals may be perceived as threats.

Pet food should not be left outside.

For those with livestock, chickens, beehives, or gardens, police recommend installing electric fencing.

Compost piles should also avoid meat scraps or sweet foods, including fruit and peels, which can attract wildlife.
