"Residents should be aware of common warning signs that may indicate a chimney fire," wrote the fire department.
These include a sudden loud roaring sound, which is often compared to a freight train or a jet engine, fire officials said.
Other indicators are unusual noises or visible flames emanating from the fireplace or the chimney itself.
If a chimney fire is suspected, the Canton Fire & EMS department advises calling 911 immediately.
It is important not to use routine lines or fire station numbers, as these phones are not monitored 24/7.
"Officials emphasize that even a short delay can allow a fire to spread into walls and attics, increasing the danger and potential for damage," wrote the fire department.
Preventative maintenance is highlighted as a critical step in avoiding such incidents.
The department recommends having chimneys inspected and cleaned regularly by a qualified professional.
"Proper and consistent maintenance can significantly reduce the risk of chimney fires occurring in homes," wrote local fire officials.
"This recent response underscores the need for community awareness regarding home fire safety," continued the local fire department.
"Adhering to these guidelines can help protect Canton residents and their properties from fire hazards. The fire department continues its commitment to public safety through emergency response and community education."
