Canton Police Issue Warning About Sidewalk Snow Removal Rules

Police on Thursday said they will begin enforcing town regulations regarding the removal of snow from public sidewalks.

CANTON, CT — The Canton Police Department is reminding residents that it will begin enforcing the town’s sidewalk snow removal law, citing concerns about pedestrian safety.

Under §375-2 of the Town Code, property owners, tenants, and occupants whose land or buildings adjoin an artificial sidewalk are required to keep those sidewalks free of snow and ice.

The ordinance requires that snow and ice be removed “as soon as practicable,” but no later than 24 hours after snowfall ends or ice forms.

The enforcement effort follows repeated reminders about residents’ responsibility to maintain safe walking conditions during winter weather.

Officials said the goal is to ensure sidewalks remain passable and reduce the risk of slips and falls throughout the community.

The department said it appreciates residents’ cooperation in maintaining safe pedestrian pathways.
