Canton Selectmen Mull Tax Breaks For Volunteer Firefighters/EMTs

CANTON, CT — With volunteer firefighters at a premium for many municipal fire departmetns, the Town of Canton is looking to increse the volunteer pool with a tax break.

As a result, the Canton Board of Selectmen is mulling a proposal that would give volunteers with the CVFD up to $2,000 off their taxes for serving the community.

Selectmen meeting on Wednesday, June 28, and, prior to a vote, they will be hosting a public hearing on the matter to gather public input on the proposal.

The hearing is at 7 p.m. in Room F of the Canton Community Center, 40 Dyer Ave., Canton.

The hope is for a new ordinance granting volunteer firefighters and emergency medical technicians tax breaks to go into effect by July 1.

The meeting will be hybrid format so that people will be able to view and participate in the public hearing remotely or in-person at the Canton Community Center.
