Concerned About Motorist Mayhem? Canton Town Meeting To Address Issue

Town and law enforcement officials will discuss next week how it is conducting enforcement operations amid a reckless driving epidemic.

CANTON, CT — Canton residents might want to attend or watch virtually the annual town meeting next week and learn a thing or two about how the town is addressing a major bugaboo.

Among three items on the agenda is a discussion on an epidemic most local residents and those in other towns are noticing — speeding and reckless driving.

The meeting is Wednesday, Jan. 25, at 7 p.m. in the Canton Community Center, 40 Dyer Ave. Those who cannot attend in person are able to watch and participate in the meeting via Zoom.

According to Canton First Selectman Robert Bessel, the town's top cop will be on hand to update residents about enforcement efforts to curb speeding and reckless driving in town.

Canton Police Chief Christopher Arciero will talk about Canton’s efforts to curtail speeding and aggressive driving, Bessel wrote on the town's website.

Bessel in recent months has been critical of motorist behavior, as Canton has had several severe accidents in recent years, along with an anecdotal uptick in erratic and dangerous driving.

Late last year, the town's police department, even, set up process where folks seeing reckless drivers can report the incidents anonymously via email, either by computer or phone.

There are two other items on the agenda that night as well. They are:

• Accepting the annual report and dedicating it to David Leff "for his commitment to the Canton community including volunteer firefighter, town historian, poet laureate, town moderator and Collinsville Historic District Commission member."

• Reviewing and commenting on a presentation by the Farmington Valley Health District on the results of the recently completed Community Health Assessment.
