Tyler English Fitness Community Trains Together

Recently built facility allows business to hone its approach.

There’s no segregation at Tyler English Fitness.

In an expansive 7,000 square-foot space, clients of all fitness levels, participating in a variety of programs, train side by side. It wasn’t always that way. Until earlier this year, the business was sprawled over several spaces on Cheryl Drive.

But since moving into the newly constructed building across the street, the programs have become much more cohesive and the camaraderie is inspiring, according to English.

“Everyone was segregated,” English said. “Now we’ve got this one big, amazing training space.”

English admits some were worried about the openness and feeling self conscious but said it’s worked wonders as participants encourage each other.

“It’s all done to bring our community together,” he said.

English said his staff keeps clients focused and doesn't allow the facility to become the social club atmosphere he feels persists at most gyms, he said many friendships are formed and participants support each other. Many even attend outside functions together. Several families also have multiple members who participate in workouts, he added.

English designed the place with bright colors, motivational signs, military tributes and other special touches that are nearly complete. The new space, open since February, also contains 2,100 square feet of additional space for office space, nutritional counseling and by-appointment massage therapy.

English opened the business in March of 2009 after working in area gyms. He expanded a couple of times before moving into the new facility. In addition, the business now has a West Hartford location.

Tyler English Fitness offers many programs including metabolic fitness training for several age groups (including boot camps), small group training, and semi-private.

The business has also became a hub, recently hosting seminars and training events, such as a recent International Youth Conditioning Association gathering.

Although not a franchise, the business has became associated with a few professional groups and associations.

The business offers many different time slots for its programs and generally starts its first program at 5:45 a.m. and has offerings as late as 7:30 p.m.

Other programs, such as Athletic Revolution summer youth offerings, are offered on specific days and times.

With the broad times and a staff of 12, English feels the facility does offer unique services for his type of business.

"We're not just here part time," he said. "We live this and we breath it."

Crystal Rosa of Burlington has participated in programs at Tyler English since November. She started with a boot camp and now receives semi-private training. She said she’s lost 29 pounds.

“I have more energy,” she said. “I have a little one so it helps a lot.”

Sue Wilson drives to Canton from North Branford after become introduced to the fitness approach through a program in Hamden.

“I got hooked,” she said. “It’s working and I’m doing it consistently.”
