The Cheshire High School Girls Varsity Cross Country Team made the Top 10 teams finishing at #9 for the CIAC State Open Championships on Friday, November 4, 2022 at Manchester’s Wickham Park. Prior to Friday’s meet Head Coach Rob Schaefer commented about the meet and stated, “This is the state championship! We have a huge mountain to climb to win. Just to be in the race is a win. I always say, “If a team makes the State Open, it’s a great season.”
After the meet on Friday Schaefer commented about the outcome of the meet and a noteworthy surprise for one of his frosh runners as well as his junior runner Alexa Ciccone. “Our times were slower today, but it seems times were slower for many if not most runners. Do not let that diminish what a great season we enjoyed. Being in the top 10 in the State of Connecticut- well, that’s awesome! Amazing run of the day: Emily D’Souza. Her 35th place position is the fifth fastest for all ninth graders in Connecticut. Alexa goes on to the New England Meet!!! How cool is that!”

The top scorers for the Rams were: coming in at #6 Alexa Ciccone time 19:20, #35 Emily D’Souza time 20:46, # 71 Mia Vientos time 21:39, #108 Ava Ciccone time 22:29, #118 Eva Curran time 22:37, #154 Alex Palladino time 23:54, & #171 Jocelyn Grace time 25:47. There were a total of 176 runners and Brooke Strauss of Glastonbury won the top spot with a time of 19:05.
What were the highs and lows of the season that just ended for the CHS Girls Varsity Cross Country Team? Schaefer stated, “The whole season was a high. I believe everyone ran a personal best at one point in the season. Cross country is always a team effort. It takes five runners to score. You can have four great runners and be a mediocre team. If you don't have that fifth, and that happens often. The lows are injuries. Two of my top runners, Sam Mudry and Katie Hall ended their seasons way too early due to injuries.”
