Annual Earth Day Celebration Planned At Cheshire Academy

Students will learn how they can engage in climate work.

Award-winning author and editor Bijal Vachharajani will kick off the annual Cheshire Academy Earth Day Celebration on April 21 with a virtual discussion, live from Bangalore, India, on environmental work taking place in India, the intersection of her dual passions of writing and sustainability, and ways that students can engage in climate work.

This year’s event is titled “When the World Works Together,” recognizing that all students—including those who are attending in person on campus and those who will be virtually attending from their hometowns around the world—can do their part to protect the environment and support sustainability initiatives.

Following Vachharajani’s discussion, students will attend in-person and online workshops, including:

• A visit to a local farm to learn about aspects of community farming and help with farm preparation
• A trip to clean up a New Haven beach as part of Save the Sound, a premier Connecticut and New York-based nonprofit working toward a more sustainable Long Island Sound
• A virtual trip to Tanzania, where students will learn the importance of conservation and sustainable tourism from program managers from Rustic Pathways student travel company
• Helping a local nonprofit design public announcements and QR codes for local environmental education and create signs for the Farmington Canal Trail • Learning from CA alumni who, through their work, are caring for people, the environment, and supporting sustainability initiatives
