Cheshire Voters Approve $3M Chapman Property Purchase
Residents approved the plan to purchase the property in a referendum

CHESHIRE, CT — Cheshire voters approved a plan to purchase the Chapman property for $3 million by a 1,705 to 862 vote in Tuesday’s referendum.
Luther Turmelle of the New Haven Register reports the Town Council is expected to receive results of environmental testing on the 10-acre farm property, which is adjacent to Bartlem Park, during the second week of October.
The council’s contract with Richard Chapman, the farm’s owner, allows the town to either renegotiate the purchase price or pull out of the deal entirely if the environmental remediation that is needed is deemed to be too costly, according to Turmelle.

The Meriden Record-Journal reports that the town will also have to demolish the houses and outbuildings on the site and remove oil tanks, which could cost an additional $2 million.
