Cheshire's Emma Farrel Lifts SCSU To Thrilling Win Over Merrimack
Farrel scores game-winning goal in final minute. She was also honored as one of the Owls' athletes of the week.
Cheshire’s Emma Farrel scored the game-winning goal with 50 seconds remaining to cap a furious second-half rally and lead the Southern Connecticut State University women’s lacrosse team to a thrilling 13-12 victory over Merrimack Sunday in North Andover, Mass.
Farrel, a freshman, finished with four goals for the Owls, who trailed 10-5 early in the second half before rallying to claim their first Northeast-10 win of the season.
SCSU improved to 2-5 overall and 1-4 in NE-10 play, while Merrimack fell to 3-6 and 1-5.

Farrel was also named as the Connecticut Army National Guard/Southern Connecticut State University Athlete of the Week, along with Tresley Dupont of the men’s outdoor track and field, on Monday.
Farrel finished the week with a team-high eight goals. In addition to the game-winning goal against Merrimack, she recorded a hat trick against Stonehill and scored once against LeMoyne. Farrel also had seven draw controls during the week.

In the win over Merrimack, Kennedy Sherman (Buchanan, N.Y.) scored a team-high six points (four goals, two assists) for the Owls. Carolynn Keal (Southington) had two goals and an assist, while Nicole Healey (Milford) added two goals.
Merrimack scored just over two minutes into the second half to build its largest lead of the game at 10-5. Two goals from Sherman and single tallies from Healey and Farrel closed the gap to 10-9 Merrimack with 15:16 left.
The Warriors quickly restored the two-goal lead less than a minute later, but the Owls answered with three straight goals. Keal scored to make it 11-10 before Sherman evened the score at 11 with 11:03 left. Farrel then put the Owls in front with 7:58 to go.
Merrimack evened the score with 1:59 remaining, but Farrel’s marker in the closing minute proved to be the margin of victory.
Goalie Nora Anderson (Stratford) stopped seven shots to earn the win.
