Congressman Christopher Murphy Holds Town Hall Meeting

Murphy holds his first constituent meeting in Cheshire since announcing his run for the U.S. Senate.

Congressman Christopher Murphy, D-5, addressed constituents’ concerns at a well attended Town Hall meeting Saturday in Cheshire.

"I don't always agree with him, but I like the guy very much," said Kim Wantroba of Cheshire.  "He's very honest and very accessible. This is the kind of thing that impresses me about him," she said.

Questions from residents who gathered at Cheshire Town Hall for the meeting focused on the economy, exports, the outsourcing of jobs, oil drilling, renewable energy sources , health care reform and taxes.

Despite the well publicized Washington gridlock, Murphy said he's working to ease partisanship through his role as a co-chair of the Center Aisle Caucus. “The general rule is if you’re a Democrat, you have to bring a Republican (to the lunch meeting) and if you’re a Republican, you have to bring a Democrat,” Murphy said. “The goal is to try to get people talking again.”

In late January Murphy said announced he would run for senate in 2012 and had to do so early to have enough time to raise the money he'll need to win the election.

The second-term congressman said  at the time that he may need to raise $10 million for his campaign to replace U.S. Senator Joseph Lieberman who announced in January that he wouldn't run again.
