Petit, a Plainville resident, is running for public office for the first time, although he previously considered a run for the 5th Congressional District in 2012 but decided against it because his wife had recently given birth to their son, William Petit III.

Petit was the lone survivor of the brutal 2007 Cheshire home invasion killings of his wife Jennifer Hawke-Petit and their children, Michaela, 11, and Hayley, 17.
