Linehan in Majority Leader's Roundtable on Reproductive Rights

The roundtable, which will occur in the upcoming weeks, will include a breakdown and analysis of Connecticut's laws on abortion.

From CT General Assembly: Rep. Liz Linehan (D-Wallingford, Cheshire, Southington) is expected to join House Majority Leader Matt Ritter (D-Hartford) and several key House Democratic legislatorsin a round table discussion on the legal landscape of abortion laws in Connecticut; including what would happen in Connecticut if Roe v. Wade were overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court.

“Trump’s nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the U.S. Supreme Court has raised questions about reproductive rights in the state, and it’s our duty to discuss Connecticut’s laws and regulations to be prepared to safeguard reproductive justice for all Connecticut residents, if necessary,” said Rep. Linehan, whose fight for reproductive justice is a core component of her legislative platform.

The roundtable, which will occur in the upcoming weeks, will include a breakdown and analysis of Connecticut’s laws and regulations on abortion and reproductive rights by policy experts, legal scholars and lawmakers.

In addition to concerns raised by President Trump’s recent Supreme Court nomination, this event is coming after the U.S. Supreme Court recently ruled 5 to 4 the FACT Act, passed by the California legislature to safeguard patients from deceptive healthcare tactics, was unconstitutional.

The court ruled the act violated the First Amendment as it “targets speakers, not speech, and imposes an unduly burdensome disclosure requirement that will chill their protected speech,” wrote Justice Clarence Thomas in the majority decision.

“40 years ago, women and the men who loved them fought for our reproductive freedom, and sadly, here we are again. I have pledged to protect women’s healthcare rights and am confident when each of us band together we can protect our right to choose and to be free from restrictive healthcare parameters meant to stifle bodily autonomy,” said Rep. Linehan.
