Second Teen Charged with Manufacturing Bombs in Cheshire: Report

The arrest stems from an investigation that began with a lockdown of Cheshire Academy in January.

CHESHIRE, CT — A second juvenile has been charged with manufacturing explosive devices near Cheshire Academy following an investigation that began with a lockdown of the school in January, according to the Meriden Record-Journal.

Cheshire Police arrested the first juvenile suspect in connection to the case on Sept. 26 and police said at the time the warrant for the co-conspirator was still pending. The second juvenile was arrested on Oct. 6, according to the Record-Journal.

The Record-Journal reports that the arrest warrants for the teens, who weren’t identified due to their age, stemmed from an investigation that began when Cheshire Academy was placed in a lockdown on Jan. 26.

At the time of the lockdown, Cheshire Police, in conjunction with the Connecticut State Police, conducted a search of the grounds at Cheshire Academy, including Von der Porten Hall, after a student was reportedly being “suspicious” with a potentially hazardous material.

Police said after the search, the initial information received by Cheshire Academy faculty was deemed credible.

During the search of the school grounds, a liquid believed to be gasoline was located in a wooded area off of the main portion of the campus was located and seized, according to police.

The investigation revealed that the juvenile suspects were actively engaged in researching and producing explosive devices in a wooded area between Highland Avenue (Route 10) and Academy Road (Route 68/70), Lt. Jeffrey Sutherland said in a press release at the time of the first juvenile’s arrest.

The juveniles were each charged with manufacturing a bomb, conspiracy to manufacture a bomb and reckless endangerment.
