THRU MAY 5: WESTERN SWIM ACADEMY: Public swimming lessons will be offered from 4:45 to 6:30 p.m at the O’Neill Center Pool on the WCSU Westside campus, 43 Lake Ave. Extension in Danbury. APR. 1 & 2 JAZZ FESTIVAL: The 21st Annual WCSU Jazz Festival will include three evening concerts in the Veronica Hagman Concert Hall in the Visual and Performing Arts Center on the university’s Westside campus, 43 Lake Ave. Extension in Danbury. Joe Lovano will be the guest performer with the WCSU Jazz Orchestra in concert on Friday, April 1. The climactic Jazz Fest concert on Saturday, April 2, will feature Kenny Garrett and his quintet. APR. 1 CHILD CARE CENTER FUNDRAISER: WCSU will host the “April Fools Family Fun Night Fundraiser” from 4 to 9 p.m. in the Student Center on the university’s Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury. This fundraiser for the WCSU Child Care Center will provide a variety of family-focused entertainment throughout the Student Center, with crafts, performers and activities aimed at families with children. The public is invited; tickets will be $10 for adults, $5 for children 6-18 and WCSU students with valid I.D., and free for children 5 and under. The maximum price per family is $25. APR. 5 WHO WANTS TO BE A MATHEMATICIAN: The WCSU Department of Mathematics will host the American Mathematical Society (AMS) math event, “Who Wants To Be a Mathematician” at 9 a.m. in Ives Concert Hall in White Hall on the university’s Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury. The event will enable high school students to compete in front of an audience for up to a $3,000 prize, provided by the AMS. Questions are in multiple choice format. The topics covered are the typical math high school topics (algebra, number theory, combinatorics, geometry, trigonometry, logic, excluding any calculus) along with some form of History of Math. APR. 5 SVPA OFFICE OF THE DEAN PRESENTS: WCSU School of Visual and Performing Arts Interim Dean Jamie Begian will present “Jurg Lanzrein - Classical Ballet Technique as a Base for Ceramics” at 6 p.m. in Room 108 of the Visual and Performing Arts Center on the university’s Westside campus, 43 Lake Ave. Extension in Danbury. Introducing the many dancers who originally were trained in the classical ballet technique and who continued or extended their knowledge and experience further or into other art forms, Lanzrein worked with acclaimed dancer George Balanchine and met composer Igor Stravinsky through his work at NYC Ballet. APR. 5 ANCELL LEADERSHIP FORUM: Austin McChord, CEO of Datto, will participate in an Ancell Leadership Forum, “Executive Insight Into Management,” at 7 p.m. in the Ballroom of the Campus Center on the WCSU Westside campus, 43 Lake Ave. Extension in Danbury. WCSU alumnus John Fillyaw, CCO of AxisPoint, will interview McChord, who was a finalist for Ernst & Young’s Entrepreneur of the Year and named a CRN Top 25 Innovator and Top 50 Midmarket IT Vendor Executive. APR. 6 COMMUNITY SERVICE FAIR: Western will host a Community Service Fair from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Warner Hall on the university’s Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury. The fair will provide the opportunity for students to get connected with local organizations from Danbury, Bethel, Newtown, New Milford, Bridgeport and other towns in the area to learn more about volunteering opportunities. APR. 7 PSYCHOLOGY LECTURE: Dr. Eric Frazer will discuss “Forensic Psychology: Current Challenges” at 1 p.m. in Room 201 of the Student Center on the WCSU Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury. Frazer is a licensed clinical psychologist with a specialization and academic concentration in Forensic Psychology. He also holds part-time faculty appointment as an assistant clinical professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the Yale University School of Medicine. He will discuss the state-of-the-art in forensic psychology. The talk will be presented as the annual Norine Jalbert Psychology Lecture. It will be free and the public is invited. APR. 8 – 10 CONSIGNMENT EVENT: The Connecticut Kids Closet will hold a spring consignment event in the Feldman Arena of the O’Neill Center on the WCSU Westside campus, 43 Lake Ave. Extension in Danbury. From 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, there will be a pre-sale for charity. Entry will be gained with a $10 donation or a bag of non-perishable groceries. APR. 12 HEALTH, FITNESS AND WELLNESS FAIR: WesternREC will host a Health, Fitness and Wellness Fair from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Bill Williams Gym in Berkshire Hall on the university’s Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury. Healthy-eating demos, local vendors, information tables and the HPX internship fair will be featured, along with free massages, raffles and giveaways. APR. 13 WELLNESS WEDNESDAY WORKSHOP: As part of the ongoing Wellness Wednesday program on campus, there will be a fitness seminar at 12:30 p.m. in Room 127 of White Hall on the WCSU Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury. Participants should come dressed in exercise clothes and ready to exercise. Those who have a yoga mat or resistance bands of their own should bring them; resistance bands will be provided to those who do not have them. Also provided will be water and snacks, and a strength-training exercise guide. The workshop is sponsored by the HPX department and the Institute for Holistic Health Studies. APR. 23 CONNECTICUT PEACE JAM SLAM: The WCSU Kathwari Honors House will host the Connecticut Peace Jam Slam from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in Warner Hall on the university’s Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury. Professor of Political Science Dr. Chris Kukk will present the keynote address. APR. 24 CHUCK’S MINI-MUDDER: The WCSU Recreation Office and the Avielle Foundation will host “Chuck’s Mini-Mudder” on the university’s Westside campus, 43 Lake Ave. Extension in Danbury. Registration will begin at 7 a.m. in the Westside Athletic Complex. Heats will begin at 8 a.m. and will occur in 15-minute intervals. The event will begin and end on the turf field of the stadium and will include 20 physical challenges over the course of two miles, many of which are covered in mud. Registration is $20 per person before April 10 and $25 per person after April 10. WCSU students can participate for free with valid I.D. There are also team discounts. Admission is $10. The show will display more than 250 quilts made by artists throughout the northeastern United States. MAY 5 COFFEEHOUSE: WCSU will present the Midtown Coffeehouse at 8 p.m. in the Colonial Corner in the Student Center on the university’s Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury. The coffeehouse will feature an open mic, followed by the featured act, WCSU a capella group Parallel Fifths, at 9 p.m. Admission will be free and the public is invited. MAY 6 WESTERN RESEARCH DAY: The 12th annual Western Research Day will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Science Building on the university’s Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury. There will be a keynote speaker at 10 a.m. in Room 125 of the Science Building, followed by a poster exhibition in the Science Building Atrium from 10:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. of research projects conducted over the past year by WCSU students in various academic disciplines.
