AWD Sold to Long Island Brothers

AWD, one of the haulers owned by former trash hauler James Galante, was sold by the U.S. Marshals Service to a pair of Long Island brothers, who grew up in the business and opened Winter Brothers Waste Systems CT, LLC, in Danbury.

Two brothers who grew up running a Long Island trash hauling firm has purchased Danbury’s AWD, the former hauling company of Jimmy Galante, who is now in federal prison, convicted of racketeering.

Winter Brothers Waste Systems CT, headquartered in Danbury, has bought Automated Waste Disposal Companies of Danbury, the former AWD, from the U.S. Marshals Service.

Galante was indicted in 2006 with other defendants, and he was charged with 93 counts, including price-fixing and bid-rigging. The indictment said Galante and his conspirators divided up western Connecticut so different hauling firms were not competing against each other, resulting in higher fees for customers.

“We are extremely grateful to have had the opportunity to work with Mayor Boughton’s office and the U.S. Marshals Service to make this purchase possible,” said Joe Winters, who with his brother Sean, purchased the company. Joe Winters is the CEO, and Sean Winters is the Senior Vice President.
