Six urban criteria were factored for the rankings: promotion (how big, and how positive is its online presence?), place (How's the weather, parks and crime rate?), product (What are the cultural institutions and other attractions?), programming (How's the shopping, dining and nightlife?), prosperity (How many corporate headquarters? What's the average household income?) and people (How diverse and well-educated is the population?).

Danbury was ranked number 3 among small cities in the category of "people," right behind Ann Arbor, MI, and Boulder, CO, and number eight for "prosperity."

Maybe it will come as no surprise that Honolulu came out on top of the small city study. Less intuitive were the other cities rounding out the top five: Omaha, NE; Charleston, SC; Albuquerque, NM; and Tulsa, OK.

New Haven was the only other Connecticut city to make the list (37), and Portland, ME, the only other New Englander.

New York City was ranked the best of the big cities, followed by Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Washington.
