DANBURY, CT — Danbury Arena, the region's professional ice hockey rink and figure skating arena, will be welcoming families to a new attraction — a roller-skating rink.

They will be converting one of the ice rinks into a roller-skating rink beginning June 10. The facility also features an axe throwing lounge, full bar, and will have a DJ skate with music and dimmed lights.

"Roller skating is one of those fun activities we can all remember from our youth," Bill Diamond, CEO of Diamond Hospitality Group at Danbury Arena, said in a news release. "Sharing skating with friends and family is a great way to spend an evening. With music, a bar, food, and more, it’s a complete night out, all in one exciting place."

Roller skating dates to the late 1700s when actors put skates on shoes to simulate ice skating. Skating became popular in the United States at the beginning of the 1900s.

The 1930s to the 1950s were roller skating’s golden age with rinks in nearly every town. Roller disco then came on the scene in the 1970s.

The sport began to decline until roller derby became a popular pastime for women. This sparked a new generation of young women who wanted to learn to skate.

"While we’re famous for two NHL-sized ice arenas and ice hockey and figure skating run through our veins here at Danbury Arena, roller skating is so much fun we had to bring it back to the area," Diamond added. "Already the excitement is amazing. I can’t wait for the first DJ night with dimmed lights and great music."

The Danbury Ice Arena offers programs for all ages and levels including public skate sessions, learn-to-skate, youth leagues and clinics, adult leagues and clinics, speed skating, and more.

Professional coaches and staff are on duty to ensure all guest experiences are enjoyable and positive.
