Danbury Business & Technical Institute Sponsors Free Lecture

Danbury's Ridley-Lowell Business & Technical Institute will sponsor a free lecture on understanding 'Economic Terminology' May 4.

DANBURY, CT – APRIL 18 – How the city calculates mill rate, what is bonded money, and what is a tax deferral, are some of the topics to be discussed at a free lecture on “Economic Terminology,” May 4, 5:45 to 7:30 p.m., sponsored by Ridley-Lowell Business & Technical Institute, 44 Shelter Rock Road, Danbury.

Third-term Danbury City Councilman Andrew Wetmore, who is also Ridley-Lowell’s admissions representative, will discuss these topics and more. Wetmore, who previously was an assistant to the Danbury Judge of Probate and a former trustee of the Connecticut State University System, says that as a government representative he is often asked questions about economic terminology.

Surprisingly, he said, people often don’t understand what the Probate Court does, what inflation and deflation mean, or what bankruptcy is. Everyday economic terms regarding government, taxes, investing and borrowing, he said, are often misunderstood.

“Some people have no idea how any of this works, how their mill rate is calculated, or what their property taxes cover, so Ridley-Lowell is offering this talk as a public service.”

Several dozen common economic and financial terms will be defined.

The lecture is not intended to provide financial advice, but to provide a better understanding of basic language used in economics and how it applies to the average person. More specifically, the areas discussed will concern government, taxes, investing, and borrowing.
