Danbury Company Honored for Commitment to Environment

Cartus received an award through CT DEEP.

The state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection presented 15 Connecticut businesses and individuals with GreenCircle awards for efforts to protect the environment and natural resources.

Cartus of Danbury was honored for taking part in Danbury’s Adopt-A-Street program for the past nine years. A street has been cleaned one day a month for that time period by volunteers. The company’s building has been outfitted with multiple recycling bins and recycled item proceeds are used to fund environmental programs.

Award winners have had a positive impact by reducing energy and water consumption, increasing recycling at their businesses and promoting conservation efforts.

Some efforts taken by companies and individuals include:

  • Business compliance with ISO 1400l Certification requirements;
  • Installation of “closed loop systems” to avoid the discharge of contaminants and hazardous materials into rivers and streams;
  • Increased recycling of solvents, hazardous waste, solid waste and electronic equipment;
  • Major reductions in electricity consumption;
  • Purchasing of “Green-E” energy; and
  • Construction of more environmentally friendly buildings such as LEED certified buildings.

“Since the Agency launched the GreenCircle Award Program 17 years ago, approximately 1100 individuals, businesses, schools and organizations have been recognized for making a real difference in preserving natural resources and protecting the quality of the state’s air, water and lands,” said Robert Klee, commissioner of DEEP.
