Danbury Coronavirus: When Will Retail Reopen? Mayor: 'Maybe June'

Mayor Boughton doesn't think Danbury stores will reopen before June, and predicts you won't want to enter one without a mask on for a while.

DANBURY, CT — There are 643 confirmed cases of the new coronavirus in Danbury, Mayor Mark Boughton announced at a Tuesday evening news conference.

When asked by a viewer of the livestream when Danbury retail outlets might reopen, Boughton said: "Maybe June. And I don't think you're going to want to go out for some of those things for a long time without a mask or gloves."

Boughton says he does not believe life will return to normal until a vaccine for COVID-19 is created.

"The way to end this, the way to end the social isolation, the way to end not being able to go to stores and restaurants (is to) have a vaccine for COVID. That's the only way you can be sure that when you go out, you're not in danger."

The mayor did say he believes the pandemic has reached its apex in the area, primarily due to the social distancing and other precautions residents have taken.

"The steps you are taking are working," Boughton said. "You are working What you are doing by staying away from other people is really helpful. Keep doing it."
