Danbury Educator Receives Presidential Award For Math And Science

A Danbury teacher was recently honored for her work in the math and science departments.

DANBURY, CT — Kimberly Moran, a math teacher from Rogers Park Middle School, is among those who recently received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.

The award was established in 1983 and represents the highest honor given by the U.S. Government to kindergarten through 12th grade teachers of mathematics and science.

Moran has taught math to 6th graders at Rogers Park Middle School for the past 16 years. She credits her colleagues and students there for the beneficial influence on her career that has led up the award.

The selection process for the distinction is facilitated by the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, and the National Science Foundation.

Teachers across the nation were chosen based on their performance in the classroom and dedication to improving science, technology, engineering, and math education.

"The whole experience has been quite overwhelming, yet wonderful at the same time," Moran told Patch. "I spent three days in Washington last week with other awardees and policy makers discussing science and mathematics in schools today."

Teachers who are selected as PAEMST awardees receive a trip to Washington, D.C.,where they attend a series of recognition events and professional development opportunities. They also receive a $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation and a Presidential certificate.

Teachers were selected for the award in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and schools in the United States territories of Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and the United States Virgin Islands.
