UPDATE: Driver in Danbury I-84 Rollover Crash was DUI

First responders found a vehicle rollover on the highway, but with no one inside.

DANBURY, CT — State Police have identified the driver and passenger in the rollover crash on Interstate 84 Monday night.

The driver, William Torres Jr., 33, of East Augustine Street in New Haven was arrested and charged with DUI. Both Torres and the passenger, Daniel Simi, 29, Uncasville, fled the scene of the crash.

When fire crews first arrived on the scene, they found the vehicle, along with 200 feet of guard rail and a highway light pole severely damaged, but no one inside.

Rescue teams began search procedures, which included deploying scene lighting, hand lights and thermal imaging cameras. Crews then organized into a search line scanning the woods and wetlands area along the highway.

Within minutes, searchers discovered one man approximately 75 yards from the scene of the accident, in a shallow depression. The second man was discovered 25 to 30 yards further away in a pool of water with a minor head injury along with signs of moderate to severe hypothermia. Special rescue procedures were necessary to remove the victim from the wetlands area, up the steep embankment, to the waiting EMS units.

Both men were transported to Danbury Hospital under advanced life support.
