Danbury High School Varsity Baseball Given Sportsmanship Award
Local Umpires highlight program's accomplishments in developing character and respect in student-athletes.

June 13th, 2018
Danbury, CT - The Danbury High School Varsity Baseball program received recognition this past Tuesday at the 37th annual Western Connecticut Umpires Association Banquet held at the Portuguese Cultural Center. The WCUA members annually award a local high school baseball program the WCUA Sportsmanship Award for a team that best exemplifies positive character, fairness, and respect of teammates, opponents, umpires, coaches, and spectators throughout the season.
This year, the award was presented by WCUA member Tony Gorman to Danbury High School’s Varsity Baseball Head Coach Shaun Ratchford, Assistant Coach Ken Reed, and Athletic Director Chip Salvestrini. Ratchford, in his 34th year, led the Hatters to a 13-11 record, reaching the FCIAC Semifinals and the CIAC Class LL Tournament 2nd round. While accepting the award, he emphasized that the ball club and field serves as an extension of the classroom for developing character in Danbury’s student-athletes.

Organized in 1972, the WCUA provides umpires for scholastic and non-scholastic baseball games in and around Danbury community. For information on joining their membership, visit wcuaumpires.org.
