Danbury Looks to Preserve, Lease First Congregational Church

The 110-year-old church would be preserved and maintained by the city, which would lease it back to the parish.

DANBURY, CT — Local officials are endorsing a plan that would see the city purchase the First Congregational Church of Danbury and lease it back to the cash-strapped parish, the News Times is reporting.

The city would be on the hook for the 110-year-old building's maintenance, but gain its use for offices, classrooms or even an arts venue. In turn, the parish would get some relief from the nearly $50,000 in insurance and maintenance, as well as needed capital expenses like a new boiler and roof.

City lawyers and parish leadership are expected to convene over the next few weeks and draft the final terms of the sale and lease arrangement by the end of February.
