Danbury Students Recognized at Connecticut Science Fair
Energize Connecticut sponsors two categories at the state's largest science competition for middle and high school students.

Danbury area students, Lasya Josyula and Jeffrey Osborne were honored as finalists at the 68th annual Science and Engineering Fair at Quinnipiac University that was held on Saturday, March 19, 2016.

eesmarts ™, an Energize CT program administered by Eversource and The United Illuminating Company, sponsored the Special Award categories of Alternative/Renewable Energy for middle and high school students; Future Sustainability for high school students; and Sustainable Resources and Practices for middle school students.
Lasya Josyula’s project, Study of Various Starch-based Biopolymers, was awarded 2nd place in the Middle School Sustainable Resources and Practices category. In her experiment, she created three different bioplastics and conducted tests on each of them to conclude which bioplastic is the best in terms of strength, biodegradability, weight, and pH. She determined that the potato plastic was the best bioplastic. She received $300 and a trophy for her achievement in the category.

Jeffery Osborne’s project, Harvesting Wind from Street Crayons using a Double Helix Wind Turbine, was awarded 3nd place in the Middle School Sustainable Resources and Practices category. His hope was to create a wind turbine that can be placed on stoplights or attached to buildings and many other areas. He designed and built a working model of a double helix “aeroturbine” based off of the double helix wind blade concept, allowing for multi-directional use.He received $200 and a trophy for her achievement in the category.
The Connecticut Science and Engineering Fair is open to students in grades 7 through 12 across the state, who compete for more than 600 spots each year. The objective of the fair is to attract young people to careers in the science and engineering industry, while also developing critical thinking skills. The fair is supported by several academic and industrial organizations throughout the state, with funds directed to the awards, operations and various educational activities.
