The Health Science Master Teacher Institute is a two-and-a-half day intensive hands-on training for innovative health science teachers from across the country. A maximum of two applicants are selected from each state. Tong, who will attend the training in November, is the only teacher selected from Connecticut.

According to the institute: “Each elite teacher will be trained and expected to redeliver acquired information in their home states and will be invited to present at the 2016 NCHSE National Health Science Curriculum Conference. Those teachers completing the Institute will receive a NCHSE Health Science Master Teacher certificate.”

Tong said she is grateful to be able to send students into the workplace prepared for a career and prepared to pursue further education in their chosen health field.

“The Health and BioScience Academy is a unique program. These Danbury High students leave the Academy with a sense of job security and the option for upward mobility,” Tong said. “Participation in the Master Health Science Teacher Program will help me better prepare these students and potentially help me reach out to a larger student base at DHS.

“Health care is a rapidly growing field and harnesses a wealth of opportunity for DHS students who pursue this career pathway,” Tong said. “My hope is to take our already comprehensive Health & BioScience Academy and make improvements that will potentially lead to more students to the field of Health Care.”
