Obituary: Nicholas Metaxas, 96, Of Danbury

DANBURY, CT — Nicholas Metaxas, 96, of Danbury, passed away on the morning of January 10. He is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Annerose; two sons, Eric and John; three grandchildren, Nicholas, Melina, and Annerose; and one great-granddaughter, Liliana.

Born in Cephalonia, Greece, in 1927, Mr. Metaxas served in the Royal Greek Navy before immigrating to the United States in 1955. His wife, Annerose, escaped communist East Germany and arrived in New York in 1954. The couple met in an English class in 1956 and married in 1959. After graduating from RCA institutes in 1960, he worked for Bulova Watch Company and later became a junior electronic engineer at Technicon Corporation in Tarrytown, NY.

Active at Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church in Corona, Queens, until 1972, Mr. Metaxas then moved his family to Danbury, where he became a prominent figure in the Greek community, serving in numerous capacities at Assumption Greek Orthodox Church. Engaged in Connecticut real estate for four decades, he dedicated much of his free time to tending extensive gardens at home. Many details of his life are recounted in his son Eric’s 2021 memoir, "Fish Out of Water: A Search for the Meaning of Life."

A viewing will be held from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 16, at Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, 30 Clapboard Ridge Road, Danbury, Connecticut, followed by the Rite of Burial at 11 a.m. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Assumption Greek Orthodox Church.
