Obituary: Philip A. Smith, 87, Of Danbury

Mr. Smith raced stock cars at the former Danbury Fair Racearena driving cars #9 and #98.

DANBURY, CT — Philip A. Smith, 87, of Danbury, husband of Joyce (Jaquith) Smith, died surrounded by his loving family at his home on Saturday, February 26, 2022.

Mr. Smith was born in Danbury the son of the late Lawrence and Doris (Durant) Smith. He attended Danbury schools and graduated from Danbury High School with the Class of 1952. He was a U.S. Army veteran having served in the Army motor pool.

A retired service station proprietor, Mr. Smith owned and operated Smith’s Garage on Route 37 N, Pembroke Road, Danbury which was established first on Ives St., Danbury, and later Pembroke Road. A member of the Southern New York Racing Association, Mr. Smith raced stock cars at the former Danbury Fair Racearena driving cars #9 and #98.

In addition to his wife Joyce of forty-two years, Mr. Smith is survived by two daughters, Kimberly McGrath and her husband Brian of Danbury and Cynthia Trachten and her husband Matthew of New Fairfield, four grandchildren Riley, Braeden, Sophia, and Grayson.

Funeral services will take place on Saturday, March 5, 2022, at 10 AM in the Jowdy-Kane Funeral Home, Danbury. Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery, New Fairfield. Friends will be received in the Jowdy-Kane Funeral Home on Saturday after 9 AM.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
