Photo Gallery: Danbury Irish Cultural Center Hosts Holiday Food Drive

Kids swapped cans for gifts and goodies last weekend and collected dozens of canned goods to stock shelves of the food pantry in the process

The Greater Danbury Irish Cultural Center, a local non-profit, used the holiday season to teach children about the power of giving.

The center held a breakfast with Santa last weekend and encouraged children to bring canned food items to give to Santa so he could help those in need. Close to two dozen children patiently stood in line, cans in hand, to visit and snap a photo with the big man in the red suit.

Volunteer Judy Corbett said, “This is a great way to teach kids to give back to their community.”

The “better to give than receive” mentality that was shown at this event occurs year-round at the center. The men’s and women’s Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH) regularly donates to Birthright of Greater Danbury to help teen moms, the Dorothy Day Hospitality House to help the homeless and Family and Children’s Aid for foster kids, among others.

The AOH also gives out scholarships each year to students of St. Mary’s School in Bethel and Immaculate in Danbury.
