Police Charge Danbury Man In January Restaurant Shooting

Police say the man fired off one shot from his handgun that struck two people during a fight at Castello Restaurant.

DANBURY, CT — Police charged a man on Thursday with two counts of assault in a shooting that occurred at an Italian restaurant in Danbury last January.

Police say Andrew Fermin, 29, of Danbury, fired off a shot from his handgun that struck two people during a fight at Castello Restaurant in the early morning of Jan. 11.

Police were called to the Emergency Room at Danbury Hospital that morning to investigate a man and woman who were being treated for gunshot wounds to their legs. Police say that around 3:15 a.m., after Fermin was struck during the fight, he fired one round that traveled through the man's leg and struck the woman, who was behind him.

After obtaining a warrant for Fermin's arrest, the police, with assistance from the U.S. Marshal's Violent Fugitive Task Force, tracked down Fermin and arrested him at his Danbury residence on Thursday.

At the time of the shooting, police say that Fermin had been wanted for absconding from parole, and for an active arrest warrant from a gun-related incident which occurred in Danbury during February 2018.

According to the police report, investigators determined that the management of Castello Restaurant was in violation of state liquor laws at the time of the shooting, and police have referred the case to the Connecticut Liquor Commission for further action.

Fermin was charged with two counts of first-degree assault, criminal possession of a firearm, first-degree reckless endangerment, unlawful discharge of a firearm, and carrying a pistol without a permit. His bond was set at $250,000.
